Plans to release year-round class schedules are being developed for the upcoming fall and spring semesters at El Camino College.
The plans would allow students to map out an entire year of classes instead of choosing classes only for the next immediate term or semester.
El Camino College would be one of the only two-year colleges in the region to offer annual class scheduling for its students.
“I know that we aren’t the first college in California to cross over into potentially allowing students to register up to a year at a time,” Carlos Lopez, vice president of Academic Affairs, said. “A few other colleges in the state have figured it out.”
The West Hills Community College District, which oversees two colleges in Central California, has offered annual scheduling at its campuses for about 10 years.
“We met with them just to kind of hear their thoughts, so when we reexamine our policies, we can be better informed to make decisions that will support students,” Kristina Martinez, acting dean of Enrollment Services, said.
Faculty will also encounter slight changes. Part-time faculty members will know their class schedules a year in advance.
As for full-time faculty, they will still teach the same classes but will have to plan their schedules in advance.
“The one change that the full-time faculty experiences is having to put the requests for a full year of classes ahead of time,” Lopez said. “But that seemed to work really well right at the end of the fall semester and early spring semester.”
Some students feel that switching to annual scheduling would relieve an end-of-semester stressor.
“I would totally love that because I wouldn’t be wondering whether or not the classes for my major will be taken up in the next semester,” communications major Kathryn Glavin, 18, said. “I would rather have my schedule at the beginning of the year and have everything locked down.”
