High school football lands at El Camino as Murdock Stadium will be the host of the 2016 L.A. City Section Championships on Dec. 3, Athletic Director Colin Preston said.
The championship games will kickoff with the Division III title game at 11 a.m., followed by the Division II finale at 3 p.m. and the Division I game at 7 p.m. according to the L.A. City Section website.
“We are pumped and excited to be the host,” Preston said.
L.A. City Section Commissioner John Aguirre said they pursued and chose El Camino and Murdock Stadium because of several reasons: brand new venue, seating capacity, availability and feasibility.
“The new facilities at El Camino College are state of the art and a great opportunity for the CIF L.A. City Section to host championship events,” Aguirre said. “We are very excited to be there now and hopefully in the future. We look forward to our partnership.”
Last season, the championships were held at Cerritos College. The season before that, they were held at the L.A Memorial Coliseum.
The new Murdock Stadium hosted its first high school football game last Friday with a Marine League showdown between the Narbonne Gauchos and the San Pedro Pirates.
Preston said it was an honor to host the televised football game between Narbonne and San Pedro.
“El Camino College has phenomenal stadium and college campus,” Preston said. “I loved seeing the student athletes, coaches and thousands of fans enjoy the experience.”
Murdock Stadium seats 8,000 and features a new field with synthetic turf and state-of-the-art facilities.
“Hosting the City Championships is a great opportunity to showcase the type of college and facilities El Camino has to offer,” El Camino football coach Gifford Lindheim said.
