“This is unacceptable,” coach Skip Parry from College of the Desert yelled as his women’s basketball team was down 15-4 in the first quarter.
As the game picked up pace, the College of the Desert Roadrunners just couldn’t keep up with the Warriors. EC played at home against the College of the Desert Roadrunners taking the victory 81-59 on Tuesday.
This victory put the Warriors at 4-2 so far this season. Overall, the team had a 63.6 percent average in the first half which EC coach Steve Shaw said was pretty great.
During the fourth quarter, Warriors freshman guard Meghan Peneueta slid across the floor as she attempted to grab the ball. She immediately got up and kept playing until the end.
“We were moving the ball which was good,” Shaw said. “There were two things I wanted them to improve on and they did. The first thing we did was out-rebound them and we also had 19 assists on 33 baskets.”
The only thing that the girls needed to work on were the turnovers. They had 26 turnovers, which Shaw said was bad. However, he was ok with it because they were aggressive turnovers and not as bad as careless turnovers.
“We just came out and started playing,” sophomore guard Kyla Jolly said. “I think that we will be able to keep winning if we keep playing like we did today. The only thing we need to work on are the turnovers.”
During the game, EC’s players were quick on their feet and just kept moving at a steady pace.
Even when they were already trailing the Roadrunners, the Warriors kept playing to win, hardly letting the other team take control.
“It all starts in practice,” Peneueta said. “Yesterday we had a really good practice, I feel like we were all just energized after the Thanksgiving break.”
Although Peneueta feels good about the victory, she says that she hopes that the team can keep the winning streak going.
“They play bigger than they are, they are not intimidated by their opponents,” Jim Sroczynski, sophomore guard Michelle Sroczynski’s father, said.
During the first quarter both teams just kept going at their own pace but EC’s women’s basketball team dominated the ball throughout.
The next game will be played at EC-Compton Center on Thursday at 5 p.m. and that will be the last non-tournament game until early January.
