The score was 22-21 with the visiting men’s volleyball team leading Long Beach City College in the fourth set.
A no-touch “bad call” for El Camino put the Warriors on tilt and the set ended 25-23 in favor of the Vikings.
“We’re on the road, we (might) not get calls,” El Camino coach Dick Blount said. “Frustrating, but we have to expect that, (if that touch ball) goes (our way) we get two points and we win.”
El Camino’s men’s volleyball team (5-6 overall, 2-2 in the Western State Conference) came out energized, but eventually fell 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 23-25) in sets on the road against the Long Beach City College Vikings (10-2 overall, 3-0 in the WSC).
“We were really challenged tonight,” Long Beach coach Jonathan Charette said. “There were some things I thought we weren’t doing to well, like our defense, which I thought we weren’t doing to well.”
Four players on El Camino hit double digits in kills with sophomore middle blocker Peter Nordel, sophomore outside hitter Nehemiah Iosia and freshman outside hitter/setter Pedro Campos all had 12 kills; while freshman outside hitter Chris Phanngam added 10.
The opposing outside hitters Andrew Pearson and Joshua Nehls were on the unstoppable side of the match. Nehls posted 15 kills to lead all players, while Pearson had 14 of his own.
“We didn’t have an answer to (Nehls) he played great,” Blount said.
Sophomore outside hitter and middle blocker Josh Riblett was a bit frustrated about the bad call.
“(The call) pisses me off,” he said. “God damn, I’m out there and you know it’s right, and you’re just trying to keep on going, but it’s tough (when it doesn’t go your way).”
The Warriors are back at home on Wednesday, March 16 to host the Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros at 6 p.m. in the South Gym.
“We struggled when the game was tight, and we need to buckle down,” freshman libero Eric Veliz said.
