Despite El Camino College women’s soccer team forward Monica Bernardino opening the score in the 57th minute, the Warriors could not get all three points at home as they tied 1-1 against Moorpark College on Friday, Sept. 27.

“I think we did really good against Moorpark [compared to the] first time we played them,” Warrior’s forward Melisia Medina, who was injured in the 1-1 tie, said. “Overall I think we’re better than them. We just got unlucky.”

After a scoreless first half where both sides struggled to get shots on goal, Bernardino slotted one past the Moorpark College goalkeeper, her seventh goal of the season, to give the Warriors (2-4-2) a 1-0 lead.

“I think I did better than the last game,” Bernardino said. “I was staying more up and I was trying to go through the defenders and I think I did and I scored.”

But eight minutes later, Moorpark College’s Dejah Wallot scored with a shot right side of the 18-yard box in the 65th minute of the game to tie the game.

ECC finished the game with 12 shot attempts and five on goal while limiting Moorpark College to just three shots on goal. The Warriors’ defense limited Moorpark to just three shots on goal as ECC goalkeeper Kelly Gallagher had two saves. The Raiders goalkeeper Erika Sanchez had four saves as the team committed 10 fouls.

“We were missing a couple of key players,” Darin Dunn, ECC women’s soccer assistant coach said. “It hurt not having them.”

Dunn added that it was disappointing to see the team not hold on to the lead after scoring first but will continue to game plan going for their next game against Compton College (3-1-2).

“Our forwards have a lot of speed,” Dunn said. “We’re looking to get them the ball as much as possible so that they can attack their goal at a more frequent basis.”With [the opposing team] only playing one-on-one with our forwards we felt that our forwards would be okay with the speed and be able to score.

The ECC women’s soccer team will travel to Compton College for their next game Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m.
