The El Camino College women’s soccer team played their home opener at the new Murdock Stadium Tuesday, which ended in a 0-0 draw against Taft College.

Neither of the teams were able to establish a good offensive rythym and get the ball past the net. Being able to create plays and have solid ball movement was a struggle for both of the sides.

Warriors’ sophomore defender, Miranda Ramirez said the team had a better overall game compared to their season opener against Irvine Valley College last Saturday, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

“I feel like we connected more,” Ramirez said.”Although, it’s only our second game this season, personally I think that our passing showed a bit more improvement. It’s hard to tell where we are headed because we are such a young team.”

Coach John Britton said during the off season the Warriors did some recruiting. Eleven out of the 19 players on the current roster are freshman.

The loss of sophomore players such as Rocio Najera, Ashley Mercado, Rylie Cole and Tonya Gonzalez meant last years freshman had to step up.

Last season, the Warriors finished their regular season with a record of (6-11-14) and (5-7-2) in conference games.

Not being able to execute the ball well last season was the main reason their winning percentage was not high. The defense was the only thing giving the team hope. Coach Britton said the new recruits will help the team offensively because the girls appear “stronger”.

The team was above .500 last season, and Britton expects them to win more games and possibly sneak their way into the playoffs.

“In these two games so far, I see potential in the offense,” Britton said. “I expect Kalyn Kaemerle to be an offensive threat since she scored for us opening day. She is proven to control and execute when needed.”

Sophomore Leslie Landeros is a player to look out for, he adds. Landeros sat out last season due to an injury. Her return will help press the defense.

Taft College assistant coach, John Delaney, said the Warriors’ soccer program has improved throughout the years.

The women’s soccer team plays game three of their long season Friday, on the road at Santa Monica College. Game starts at 2 p.m.
