Despite missing their captain and front row setter, the El Camino College Warriors women’s volleyball team dominated in its home game against the Los Angeles Harbor College Seahawks in all three sets at the ECC Gym Complex on Friday, Oct. 10.
Warriors setter Jasmine Zalewski and defensive specialist Jerelyn Justo substituted as setters in place of team captain Justine Sapitanan.
“That sometimes caused a little bit of chaos, but they did a good job of working together to overcome that,” Warriors coach Liz Hazell said.
The Warriors continued their winning streak against the Seahawks, having defeated LA Harbor, 3-0, in both matchups during the 2024-25 season.

Despite the switch-up in roles, the Warriors won, 3-0, securing their first home win and moving to a 6-10 record on the season.
The Warriors’ next game is Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. at home against the Compton College Coyotes (1-10).
“I feel like I gave it my all … to set my team up as best as I possibly could,” Justo said.
Included in their new 6-2 offensive rotation was Warriors outside hitter Jordyn Garlitos, who played in a front-row position after playing in the back all year.
With an injured knee from high school, Garlitos said she didn’t get much practice in playing a front-row position prior to the match.

“I think it was just to try something new … I think I did OK for not getting as many reps as I used to,” Garlitos said.
Toward the third set, the game was close, with ECC winning the set, 25-22.
Seahawks middle blocker Rachel Cumming said there was a shift in energy in the last set that improved their performance.
Some Warriors players felt they should have won by a larger majority.
“I feel like we could have beat them a lot sooner. We were really scrappy,” Warriors libero Cynthia Nario said.

ECC finished the second set at another close call, winning the set, 25-20.
“I feel like we should have won by a lot more … we should have kept them under 10,” Justo said.
ECC Athletic Director Abi Francisco said she always has high hopes for the team’s performance.
“I always say in every volleyball game, I expect three and 0,” Francisco said.
Hazell expressed optimism about the upcoming games for her team.
“Hopefully we continue, … use this and keep building on it,” Hazell said.
