The El Camino baseball team came out ready to go from the first pitch of the 2016 season.
The team scored three first-inning runs and jumped to an early lead before dominating Antelope Valley College 12-1 in the match.
“It was nice, especially (for) your first game, the longer it stays close the longer you press.” coach Nate Fernley said. “Being able to go out there and put a couple of runs up early was huge.”
All 12 of those runs were earned as the Warriors came out swinging collecting 17 hits, which really impressed coach.
“If you look at the scoreboard we had 12 runs and they didn’t have any errors and only walked a couple guys.” Fernley said.” You usually don’t score like that unless they make some errors so I was really impressed the way our guys came out today and hit the pitches they did.”
A few players stood out on offense with multiple extra-base hits including sophomore first baseman Jake Sahagian, sophomore third baseman Zack Ferreira, and freshman center-fielder Noah Barba.
Barba laced a double off of the top of the wall and later capped off the scoring with a 3-run home run, making it 12-0 in the seventh inning.
“That double was a change-up, it was a 2-1 count so I was looking off-speed.” Barba said. “On the home run I just jumped on the fastball.”
Not to be overlooked was the pitching by the Warriors, only allowing three hits on the day. Starting pitcher Cassius Hamm went four innings giving up 1 hit and struck out the last six batters he faced.
“I felt really good.” Hamm said. “The first couple of innings I threw a lot of fastballs, but the last few I started throwing my off-speed and kept hitters off balance.”
The Warriors next game is on the road versus Marin College Feb. 4 at 3 p.m.
