The women’s basketball team (6-0 SCC-S) can clinch the South Coast-South conference title for the first time since 2005 when they face the second-placed Cerritos Falcons (5-1 SCC-S).
If they win at Cerritos on Friday, the title would be the Warriors’ second overall since the sport was sanctioned by the California Community College Athletic Association in 1978.
Coach Steve Shaw was at the helm in 2005 as well during his 14th season as coach of the women’s team. EC shared the title with the Falcons that year and reached the second round of the regional playoffs.
The Warriors have two games remaining in the regular season, against Cerritos on Friday and against LA Harbor next week.
A win on Friday would clinch the title solely to EC. However, even if they lose this week they can still claim at least a share of the title with a win over LA Harbor next Friday.
The Warriors are the no. 8 seed in the southern California region. The top 18 seeds qualify to the regionals, therefore a playoff berth for EC is all but a formality.
Tip-off for this week’s showdown game is at 7 p.m. at Cerritos College.
