Losing its goalie in the first 15 minutes of the playoffs’ game against Harbor College was something the men’s soccer team did not expect.
“Our starting goalkeeper received a head injury and was no longer able to continue playing in the game,” Ozzy Rodriguez, midfielder, said.
The team ended its season with a loss, 5-1, in the first round of the playoffs.
Rodriguez said that losing its goalie, Nolan Dean, allowed an early, easy goal within the first 15 minutes into the game.
“We seemed to not let it get to us as we knocked the ball around pretty well for about five minutes, but Harbor College seemed to dominate the game,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said that when Harbor College scored the second goal, he felt the Warriors gave them confidence.
“Our team slowly began to fall apart as we continued to make one mistake after the other,” Rodriguez said. “The game was very intense and physical.”
Shaun Nagano, midfielder, said that after Harbor College scored its third goal his teammates heads kind of dropped.
“They just took advantage of the opportunities,” Nagano said. “I felt that the referee was one sided.”
Nagano said that he was annoyed because he thought the referee just kept on making a bad call after another.
“We had moments in the game when we played well together but we were not focused,” Nagano added.
Rodriguez said he felt his teammates weren’t in the game mentally.
“The coach told us that he wasn’t worried about our talent and abilities. He was more concerned about our mentality,” Rodriguez said. “That’s what I believe was the cause of our struggle.”
Andrew Britton, assistant coach, said that when Dean got injured Harbor College took advantage.
“We had to put in our back up goalie Chris Mellone and prepare him mentally and physically,” Britton said. “He played very well under that pressure given the situation and showed a lot of potential.”
Britton said that the Warriors could have increased the intensity and their desire to win because the intensity was definitely not there.
“The other team had more desire to win. They went for every tackle, won every header,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said that Harbor College’s intensity was there and its defense was very aggressive, which made it difficult to take on.
“They defended together, each player played their role as a team should, which we didn’t,” Rodriguez said.
