The men’s volleyball team barely beat the worst team in the conference 25-20 in the first set.
That’s when several reserves made their start in the second set to relieve the starters.
Sophomore outside hitter Ka-Wai “Matthew” Chen served up a nice ball, and it came back empty.
Chen served for four consecutive points as the Warriors took an early 3-1 lead.
They did not let go of the pedal and walloped the Beavers in set two, 25-10.
The 15-3 Warriors visited the 0-14 L.A. Trade Tech College (LATTC) Beavers on Wednesday night and won 3-0 in sets.
El Camino quickly came out and played a close first set, playing six of their seven original starters; only sophomore outside hitter Allen Sarinana did not play tonight.
Coach Richard Blount was not pleased with the performance of his players, but it did not stop them from beating LATTC 25-20 in the first set.
“We played sloppy with the starters,” he said. “We need mental work. We have to be more prepared.”
Sophomore libero Grant Stevenson came in and played as outside hitter in set three.
“It was really fun,” Stevenson said. “It really reignited my passion for volleyball.”
The Warriors swept the Beavers by winning set three and freshman middle blocker Peter Sarmiento hopes Grossmont is their next opponent in the playoffs.
EC, who is in second place in the Western State Conference will face whoever finished third in the Pacific Coast Conference.
“(Grossmont is) lopsided,” he said. “They have one really good player and the rest are, you know; but they are a solid team.”
Although the standings in the Pacific Coast Conference show Irvine Valley as the third seed, things could shake up and Orange Coast or Grossmont could be coming to visit the Warriors on April 17.
Sophomore outside hitter and captain of the Warriors, Casey Wood, said the team was ready for whatever comes next.
“We’re absolutely prepared,” he said. “We’ll be headed to Friday’s game to scout Irvine Valley.”
“We’re as confident as can be,” he added.
Stevenson said the team needed to keep the “intensity up,” should they make a run in the playoffs.
Blount said that having the right mindset is crucial to getting far in the post season.
“Everyone is good,” he said. “If we don’t come to win, we’ll lose.”
The Warriors end the regular season 16-3 overall and 9-3 in conference play. They are the No. 2 seed in the Western State Conference.
They will host the third seed of the Pacific Coast Conference they are 9-1 at home this season, with their only loss coming at the hands of Santa Monica College.
