Men’s tennis team falls to Bakersfield

The EC men’s tennis team came off a 9-0 win when they played the Renegades of Bakersfield College in the first ever meeting between the two sides. The men’s tennis team lost at home 8-1 as they went 1-2 for the season.

“Losing our first game against Irvine Valley was our wake up call. It was a chance to get the nerves out,” said assistant coach Yasu.”Our second game against Cypress was decent.”

Yasu also told his team during the pre-game pep talk to “not play their game.” Each game was a best two out of three set match. Both teams started with singles and ended with doubles.

“I feel like I got lucky after winning my match,” said Ricky Kingham,18 after being asked about his singles win. “I tend not to think negative at any time although being down 2-1 in the first set was troublesome. “

The other win that went on the official score sheet was for Seth Abram who also won in two sets; 6-3, 6-4 against Brian Yanez.

Two single games when into a third set for EC. The first was between John Legardy of EC and David Perez of Bakersfield. Legardy lost in a close battle 7-6, 7-6, 4-6.

The second close singles game was Dillion Sisson versus Chanrien VI. Their score was 6-4,7-6,7-3.

Freshman, Andrew Miyazato lost his singles match but said “In my second set I felt confident.” He still cheered his team on during the single and double matches.

“The main thing we got to do is stay focus,” said Yasu. “We just have to show them our true game.”

The next match is on Feb. 5 at Saddleback. The next home match is against Orange Coast College on Feb. 10. Both time are set for 2 p.m.
