Bang.
As the second set began, the El Camino women’s volleyball team seemed to be in the right mood as it opened up a dominating performance on the back of sophomore Taylor Brydon. Two kills for her gave the Warriors a 4-0 lead on the road against the Santa Monica College Corsairs on Wednesday night.
“Hashtag bouncetown,” Erik Jensen, EC men’s volleyball player, said in the crowd. “That was so nice.”
It didn’t stop there, as she put up some big hands for back-to-back blocks to give EC a 6-0 lead.
“EC Roof and Co.,” Jensen added before the Corsairs took a timeout.
The home team couldn’t muster up any offense or defense, and were rousted in set two, 25-7, at the hands of the South Coast Conference defending champion El Camino Warriors; who are now 1-0 on the season after sweeping the Corsairs 3-0 (25-21, 25-7, 25-11).
“Going in to the second set, we picked up the pace a lot,” Le Valley Pattison, El Camino women’s volleyball head coach, said. “We were a little slow moving from offense to defense. I think Taylor [Brydon] is going to be key for us. She’s stronger, faster (than before) after playing beach.”
This season proves to be no different for sophomore setter Nina Wyer; who is in yet another setter battle, and although last year her competition was Cassie Montanez and Skyler Ceballos, this year she’s surrounded by sophomore Michelle Shimamoto and a freshman, Megan Lim.
Although tonight’s starter was Wyer, she knows her job is at risk at any given time.
“I think it’s more competitive this season,” she said. “Especially with Michelle, (she’s) a good setter, and then we have Megan this year.”
The Warriors are on the road again for two matches against San Diego Mesa College and Southwestern College on Saturday, at Long Beach City College.
While Wyer will hope to get the nod as the starter, for the rest of the season, Pattison thinks that none of the three have really stepped into the role as the main signal caller.
Even though the team is now 1-0, Pattison will get the team ready for Saturday’s matches and thinks that the record is “better than 0-1.”
