Marijuana has been a hot subject this past year with the possibility of being legalized and it even being described to be a great source to increase revenue for the state’s economy.
Many can argue that marijuana is another problem in the making and another legal mind alternating substance that the country does not need.
According to the official “Addictive Drug” Web site, not only is marijuana addictive from long term use but it can also most importantly affects one’s memory.
However, marijuana does have a positive effect with patients in need. According to the Drug Policy Alliance Network official Web site “Marijuana has a medical value in treating patients with serious illnesses such as AIDS, glaucoma, cancer, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and chronic pain.
But more importantly marijuana can play a major role in providing a boost in the economy.
CNN’s official Web site states that “Assuming a national consumer market for marijuana of about $13 billion annually, Harvard economist Jeffrey Miron has estimated that legalization could be expected to bring state and federal governments about $7 billion annually in additional tax revenue, while saving them $13.5 billion in prohibition-related law enforcement costs”
The substance might not solve the whole economy crisis, but it would boost revenue.
What Congress is forgetting about is that in 1919 a similar proposal was made when alcohol was first became illegal in the 1920s in the US.
During the Prohibition Period after crime rates rose and people who were selling the illegal substance (alcohol) made millions, alcohol was finally made legal and taxed in 1933.
As of today, there have been petitions being signed nationwide from registered voters to try to propose legalizing marijuana to be on the ballot for the 2010 election as they see it as history repeating its self.
Many voters have their own say on why marijuana should be on the ballot, but what Congress should realize is that the current crime of selling marijuana to nonmedical patients in the US is making millions of dollars that no one else is seeing other than drug czars.
