In an effort to recruit students, El Camino hosted a welcoming event for former ITT Tech students on Wednesday evening in the East Dining Room.
ITT Tech closed all of its 130 campuses in September, leaving thousands of students displaced and uncertain about receiving their degree, according to an article from CNN.
EC hosted the event in order to inform the former ITT Tech students about financial aid opportunities and educate them about the programs offered by EC which are similar to the ones that were offered at ITT Tech.
Barbara Perez, vice president of EC Compton Center, said she arranged the fair to put the focus back on the students who were left in limbo from the sudden closure of their school.
“I want them to see what we have to offer them,” Perez said. “We also have the same programs that were offered (at ITT Tech).”
Perez added that she met with the representative of admissions from both EC campuses to make a plan for recruitment.
Student Services Adviser Emmanuel Aguilar said it was good that former ITT Tech students were coming in to see all the different programs that EC is offering.
“I pitch to students the low cost of units, and that you can still add classes,” Aguilar said. “I want to welcome these students into a friendly environment.”
Aguilar added that they can receive their AA-T within three years by attending night and weekend classes.
Some of those in attendance said that it gave them an opportunity to continue with their schooling due to their eligibility to have some of their units transferred from ITT Tech to EC.
“I plan to attend El Camino College,” Felipe Quintero, 20, said. “I plan to sign up for electronics and programming.”
George Davis, 39, electrical engineering major, said he enjoyed the event and added that he is looking forward to attending EC
“The professors that I talked to are enthusiastic and friendly, just like the former ITT Tech faculty,” Davis added.
