Student who threatened campus has hearing moved to new date

Update: Minor corrections have been made at 10:24 p.m.

The court date for the student who allegedly threatened the school was moved to March 10 over some complications of the case.

Public defender Jonathan Cruz went to court aiming for a dismissal of the charges, on James Lemus, because of some misinterpretations of some testimony and arguing the theme of “sustained fear.”

District attorney Patrick O’Crowley was given the opportunity to say some things in order for the testimony to stay.

Cruz argued that Dean of Humanities Tom Lew’s testimony was “misinterpreted” according to the police report.

Lew’s testimony said that he was afraid for his well-being and that his statement was similar to Associate Dean of Humanities Elise Geraghty.

But according to the statements given by Geraghty to the ECPD, she said that she was not afraid of the threats from Lemus because he was already incarcerated by the time she had even heard of the threats.

Judge Eric C. Taylor agreed with the findings and dismissed Lew’s testimony and Geraghty’s testimony will be added to the next hearing.

The next pre-trial hearing will take place at the Torrance Superior Court on March 10.
