Although the turnout was not as large as it was last year, the Associate Student Organization (ASO) election last week was a complete success, Josh Casper, 19, president of ASO, said.
“From what I can tell, the election has gone very well,” Casper said. “It was not as big of a competition as it was last year.”
“This year, most people are not opposed. It has not been a real competition as it has been for Lucy Rivera and Timothy Linehan who ran for vice president,” Casper said.
Other than competing for vice president, the rest of the cabinet or positions were open with just one person running for a particular position, Casper said.
“Few of the senator’s positions were either open or there were only two people running for two different positions as well,” he said.
The president and vice president will be sworn in tomorrow at the end of the year banquet. They will not take the oath of office, however, until July 1.
“We have had two special elections and this general, it has been exciting having the position of organizing and getting to see the candidates before the election,” Jose Iglesias, 21, vice president of ASO, said.
A list of the winners was posted on the ASO board right outside of its office inside the Student Activities Center on Monday, May 17, Casper said.
“This year the candidates and I were out there campaigning and afterwards I saw that I won student trustee and that was a great thing. I am very happy to serve students at EC,” Johanna Zamora, 19, engineering major, said.
Some of the winners include, new president Jessica Lopez, vice president Timothy Linehan, student trustee Johanna Zamora, director of finance Ryuichiro Enomoto, region 7 representative Meg Panlaqui and student services officer Chloe Smith.
“The elections went well. I didn’t think that there were going to be many students for next year’s ASO, but after looking at the results, I think having them involved is great. I am happy to be the one to lead the students in the upcoming year,” Jessica Lopez, 19, engineering major, said.
They will not have any power until July 1, that is when Jose Iglesias and I will be finished with our term, Casper said.
“Although we have to wait until July to have power, I am really excited with the turnout. I do not feel that it will be a lot of pressure, but there will be a lot of learning,” Chloe Smith, 19, major, said.
Iglesias said that he wishes the new cabinet good luck because the entire cabinet is leaving after this year.
“I am very proud of everyone that has been running. They have been campaigning hard, and I look forward to hearing about their term of office next year,” Casper said.
