With the job market becoming extremely competitive, the campus Career Placement Services center takes some stress away with helping students apply for internships.
Patty Kawashiri, a student services technician, said that it is important for students to consider internships because it looks good on a resume and it gives them actual work experience.
“I think internships are a good idea, because in some cases that’s a for sure way to get a job with a company to start out, it’s a for sure foot in the door,” Gloria Pratt 20, atmospheric science said.
Linda Lew, also a student services technician said there are internships in various areas of interest such as in biology, arts, horticulture and music. Current available internships include working as event planners, web designers, electricians and also an interning with museums.
“As of right now there are twenty internships available,” Lew, said.
For some students one concern is finding a paid internship.
“In general internships are beneficial, but I think people are looking for a paid internship because time is valuable when you’re a full time student and also the expenses that come with working with internships like gas,” Pratt said.
Services are available to all EC students and alumni who are currently enrolled in at least one semester unit or who have completed a minimum of 15 semester units.
Internship opportunities could be viewed at the CPS bulletin board located at the Students Service Center on the 2nd floor in room 204.
Students can also look up information online on the official EC website and find a direct link that is constantly updated with new internship opportunities.
“After thirty days, we call to find the status of the postings on the bulletin, so they are all up to date,” said Kawashiri.
Aside from providing information about internships the campus Career Placement Services center also provide help student’s resumes and give advice for interviews, and help with job searches.
