EC women’s basketball team clinched its first South Coast-South conference title in 10 years with 65-60 win over Cerritos College. The win also sealed a playoff berth for the Warriors.
EC’s win was a team effort as four players finished with double-digits in scoring. Sophomore forward Sydney Chase (West Torrance HS) and sophomore guard Nisja Bass (Mayfair HS) had 13 points a piece. Sophomore forward Shontalene Trudeau (West Torrance HS) finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Helena Jones-Caldwell (Inglewood HS) added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Warriors shot 77 percent from the free throw line and converted 20 of 21 in the second half. Cerritos cut EC’s lead to 50-49 with 3:46 left in the game but the Warriors scored their final 12 points from the free throw line to secure the win.
EC (19-8, 7-0) will host their last game of the regular season on Friday, Feb. 20 versus Los Angeles Harbor College. Tip off is at 7 p.m. The Warriors will then wait to be seeded in the regionals. The top 18 seeds qualify from the southern California region.
