Members of the campus and leaders of their respective sections gathered for a final meeting of the semester to discuss campus issues on Tuesday.

The Academic Senate focused on two issues that sparked a lot of conversation; new requirements for financial aid and course repetition.

Carolyn Pineda, representative for the institution of research and planning, presented the new plan for BOGFW (Board of Governors Fee Waiver) and the new restrictions and requirements that will be implemented in the fall semester of 2016.

“This is the first time there is going to be criteria before you can get the award, if you’re not meeting those standards, you will no longer receive that money,” Pineda said.

Students could be in danger of their awards being taken away if they have less then a 2.0 GPA for two consecutive semesters or attempting 12 or more units and dropping half of those units.

After the talk of the BOG speaks, the meeting transitioned into speaking about “family classes.”

Mark Lipe, the curriculum chair announced that in the spring semester of 2016 students will come to face “tracking and blocking” of enrollment in courses of a family within classes in performing arts, visual arts and physical education.

Enrollment limitations were made on these classes in January 2013, but now they are discussing further restrictions made to students on these courses in those selected categories.

The Active Participatory Courses and Related Families report by Lipe elaborates more on the new action of course repetition.

“Students receiving a satisfactory grade in active participatory courses may not enroll in that course again,” Lipe said. “In addition to losing repeatability of these courses, Title 5 allows only FOUR takes or experiences within a ‘family’ regardless if the student received a passing grade or W, D, F, or NP in the course.”

Lipe said that the curriculum board will continue its look into the details and conversation of the new course repetition restrictions.
