“Today is a great day to celebrate,” Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said about the passing of the new Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act, and we agree.
Transferring from a community college to a Cal State university just got a little bit easier with SB 1440, which “requires the California State University to guarantee admission with junior status to any community college student who meets the requirements for the associate degree for transfer.”
Finally, all of the hard work community college students put in day in and day out will be rewarded.
The bill aims to eliminate the problem of students spending excess money on courses that only transfer to specific universities. It would prevent students from retaking courses that are similar to one’s they already completed.
With the state of the economy the way it is, having to pay for college is already difficult for without having to pay for unnecessary courses.
This will also help with understanding the transfer requirements for all California State Universities. It will create a common transfer agreement so students will no longer have to pile on extra classes for each university.
Students will no longer have to worry about being able to walk with their classmates on graduation day, and will be able to acquire the necessary units for transferring while achieving an associate’s degree.
Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Pacoima, the author of SB 1440, said only a quarter of all community college students go on to universities, and that’s just not acceptable.
Students are putting in the time and effort to become educated, successful members of society and the government should do whatever it can to help them with that journey.
To those who think it may lower the bar of student expectations of wanting to transfer, fear not.
Just because the technicalities of transferring may become easier, this doesn’t mean the class work will and those who are deserving will be able to move on in their college career.
Students are busy enough as it is studying for the courses that will prepare them for their future careers; we shouldn’t have to study the pages of transfer requirements for each and every university in California. With this bill we won’t have to.
This bill is something to be proud of, something that will truly help during a dim time of budget cuts and reduced classes. Students transferring soon may rest easy, because the path to the future just got a little less bumpy.
