By 2015, the campus will be converted into an energy efficient one under a proposal by the Facilities Master Plan approved in January, president Thomas Fallo said.
“We’re cutting it close because we’re going to run out of money in 2015,” Fallo said.
The 2010 Facilities Master Plan that will renovate the campus will cost approximately $563 million.
With the remaining available balance from the Measure E (State Community College capital improvement bond) being only $244 million there is $319 million yet to be funded.
Where the money will come from to fund there projects is uncertain, but the college could ask voters for more bond money.
One of the major changes that the campus will experience within the next five years will be moving the police department into a new facility.
Fallo also said that another major change to the campus that will take place next year is the construction of a new, three-story parking structure on the north side that will consist of 900 parking spaces.
“It would be nice to have a parking structure more on campus. I dread walking to my car after class. Thinking about how far I have to walk to my car on a cold, windy, rainy or hot day is terrible,” Kosi Burton, 20, undecided major, said.
Another major change will be the relocation of the Student Services Center to where the Shops Building is currently located.
The Shops Building will be relocated to where the baseball field currently is.
“The Student Services Center will become Student Services. There will be a new drop-off area with landscaping,” Fallo said.
In addition, the track will be incorporated into the Murdock Stadium making it one venue.
“Every sports facility looks good except for the track field. They made a new softball and baseball field, the stadium and basketball gym is nice. It is bad that the track team does not have any home games at and it seems like EC is the only school still with a dirt track,” Eric Myles, 23, kinesiology major, said.
The Mathematical Computer and Science (MCS) building will be remodeled and the loading dock will be removed.
The nursing program will be moved into the MCS Building, Fallo said.
The campus will also place benches in the already constructed Humanities Mall.
“We want some outdoor seating. We want people to be able to congregate and to be in the shade,” Fallo said.
We will begin the renovation of the Social Science Building in July and it will be completed in June 2011, Fallo said.
The Bookstore renovation will begin September. The elevator and book buy back area will be redone, Fallo said.
