The week of spring break means different things to different people; from a week of partying to seven days of almost nonstop sleep, and the views of EC students as to how to best spend it range just as differently.
“I just want to take some time off and not have to think about tests and studying,” Bobby Karabura said.
Karabura is a 25 year old Psychology major and has been at El Camino for the past two years.
“I can’t wait to sleep past 7 a.m. and pretty much have nothing that I have to do, but instead be able to do things I want to,” Karabura said.
Many students at EC seem to have similar plans for their spring breaks but others are going to make the most of their week off of school by packing it full of fun and events.
“I’m going to visit all my friends who have already transferred and see the campuses they attend,”
Martha Dykezel said. Dykezel, 21, is a graphic design major and plans on transferring out of EC sometime next year.
“I really want to take this time off of work and school to find out where I want to transfer to, because this is the only time I have free when these schools are in session,” Dykezel said.
This is not to say that she plans on all research and no play.
“I also want to of course go out and have fun; I just turned 21 after all!” Dykezel said.
Another option some students are exploring is that of going on road trips with their friends and fellow students.
“My friends and I rented a hotel room in Palm Springs and plan on tanning and getting away from our houses for a while,” Rebecca Sharp, 19, and an Economics major said.
Many students attending community college do live at home and therefore when a time comes when they have the chance to break out on their own they usually jump at it.
“This is my first time being allowed to go out of town alone without my parents and I’m just really excited to not have them over my shoulder,” Sharp said.
With so many beautiful locales within a few hours of this area these week long excursions don’t have to break the bank either.
“We have 5 people going and we each are only paying about $150 total for the 4 days,” Sharp said.
For some students though even a vacation this inexpensive is too much for them and they opt to spend their free time earning money instead.
“I plan on working to earn some money so that I can take some time off come finals and not have to worry about paying my bills,” Katelynn Rodgers said.
Rodgers is a 19- year old Biochemistry major and understands the value of taking advantage of even a week without school.
“I know that in order to pay for school I need to work hard and at this point spending a week partying or going on a trip just doesn’t make sense,” Rodgers said.
