On September 5, 2008 an 18-year-old student was walking alone at about 6:45 p.m. to her vehicle when someone approached
and assaulted her from behind, campus police chief Michael Trevis said in a statement.
This was the last crime documented and reported on Ucrime.com, a web site dedicated to showing statistics of crimes around
universities across America.
“My mom didn’t want me going to this school,” Monica Rocillio, engineering major, said.
“She said there are to many shootings here.”
Throughout EC students are reporting crimes to the local police and are getting results, but these crimes are not being reported
to Ucrime.com, which allows anyone to see the crime rates of a school.
“Personally, I’d like a web site that showed me what goes on at the campus. At least I can compare it to other schools.” Eveyln Rocillio,
mother of Monica, said.
Ucrime.com has not been updated in awhile and, as a result, has not been looked at by other students or parents who find this
information invaluable.
It seems that the person with the most knowledge of Ucrime.com, Sgt. Taruno, is currently tied up with more pressing matters
than updating a web site. Sgt. Taruno is currently making preparations for the upcoming accreditation visit.
But how well known throughout campus is Ucrime.com?
“Ucrime? What’s that? The way I find out about things is I hear it from rumors.” Joe Dimaano, who is studying to be a nurse, said.
Rumors around campus seem to be the was news travels throughout school, and it travels like wild fire.
“Apparently there was a shooting, here last Friday. I over heard a couple of my friends talking about it at in class.” Dimaano said.
Not very many people on campus know what Ucrime.com is or what it is about. Even the campus police do not know
much about Ucrime.
Out of ten people asked what Ucrime is, no one was able to give an answer, only various retorts of “what?” and “no”.
The police window at EC gave similar responses.
When asked about Ucrime, the response was the same, that none of the other personal or sergeants knew much about our
Ucrime account.
But the responsibilty of the Ucrime account of EC is not the responsibilty of Sgt. Taruno alone. The website does offer
anyone a chance to help report crime on their campus.
It is also possible to ask the local police for any recent crime activites and report them. At the click of a button anyone
can help become a crime reporter for EC.
Ucrime.com is a web site designed to help students, teachers, parents, and even police personal understand what is going on in their
school.
When you register you get normal updates about your campus (or updates whenever someone reports something). Registering is
as simple as providing some personal information.
If anyone is interested in contacting Ucrime.com to report a crime or to find out information, visit their web site at www.ucrime.com
or contact them by mail at 300 E. Lombard St., Suite 840, Baltimore, MD 21202.
“Crimes should certainly not go unreported. I think both the students and police should make a better effort at keeping everyone
at school updated about crime all the time.” Dimaano said.
