Halloween Horror Nights prepares for opening night

A camera clatters to the ground, accompanied by the gasps and squeaks of a throng of startled journalists, as a woman’s blood curdling scream of “Ay, mis hijos!” (meaning, ‘Oh my children!” reverberates through the room.

Other then a few pairs of soiled underwear, nobody is actually hurt; the frighteningly realistic scream is really all part of Universal Studios Hollywood’s sneak preview of its Halloween Horror Nights.

Opening tomorrow night at 7 p.m. and continuing on 19 select dates until Halloween, Universal Studios hopes to bring its heritage as an innovator in the horror genre to life for visitors of the park, John Murdy, Creative Director  said.

“I think what we do that’s unique is that we go for movie quality, we want to create that movie quality environment so that if you’re a fan of a series, you feel like you’ve really walked into that world,” Murdy said.

Headlining this year’s Horror Nights will be a pair of attractions based upon AMC’s hit television series “The Walking Dead.”

The first event, a brand new maze titled “The Walking Dead: Dead Inside”, has Universal makeup artist, Samantha Ward excited.

“It’s really awesome to be able to recreate makeups that people recognize, like this year with “The Walking Dead,” we’re using actual zombie characters from the show so that people will be able to recognize them when they come through the maze,” Ward said.

The other attraction featuring AMC’s popular show will be an update to Universal’s traditional “Terror Tram” attraction, in which park visitors will come face-to-face with hordes of living corpses in the park’s backlot.

“The ‘Terror Tram’ is one of the most popular attractions since it’s the only time people can walk on the historic Universal backlot where the horror film genre was born,” Murdy said.

Other featured attractions of the event will be mazes based upon the movie “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, the Mexican folktale “La Llorona”, Alice Cooper’s classic album “Alice Cooper Goes to Hell”, and the video game “Silent Hill”, which makeup artist Robyn Rebbe can’t wait to reveal to the public

“Who doesn’t love Silent Hill? I’m so excited for Pyramid-head (A monster from the game), seeing that thing walking around will be amazing!” Rebbe said.
