The El Camino College is more than half-way through the spring semester. Communities, departments, centers and clubs are coming out with a variety of free activities for students to take advantage of through out May.
Festival of the Arts
The ECC Art Gallery is putting together the event, which will take place Thursday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. For 10 hours, various artistic mediums will come together for one Festival of the Arts.
The festival will feature: open mic, maker’s fair, chalk walk, animation projects, quilt workshop, jazz ensemble, poetry and more.
It is a way to bring people together to express their artistic side and to promote students to enroll in Summer and Fall classes where they can meet teachers directly.
Society of Music Club
Another active artistic community on campus is the Society of Music club.
Star Wars fans are invited by The Society of Music Club for an orchestral concert called “May The 4th Be With You” in the Art Gallery from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, May 4. Free cake will be provided, as will free entry for students and $5 for those attending outside of ECC.
Students can experience a live music showcase Wednesday, May 29, at 7 p.m. in the Haag Recital Hall, where students will be provided with free pizza and free admission, along with $5 for the general public.
Gender, Sex and Alliance Club
Parades, shows and festivals will be taking place during Pride Week hosted by the Gender Sex and Alliance Club. Starting May 17 to May 22, students can expect five days of celebration, community and visibility for any LGBTQIA+ staff and students on campus.
The Gender Sex and Alliance Club is set to host its third annual Lavender Extravaganza on Tuesday, May 19, at 6 p.m. in the East Dining Room. This event will honor LGBTQIA+ students and allies for their achievements and contributions to the college community, and is open to family and friends.
Transfer and Career Center
Student Services and Social Justice Center are hosting the “Agents of Social Change” Career and University Fair Thursday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m, on the Library Lawn. The fair will connect students with universities, employers, campus resources and free pizza that will be provided.
Graduation Ceremonies will be taking place June 10-11, Wednesday and Thursday, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Murdock Stadium. Check-in is from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the North Gym. Students must sign up, file an intent to graduate and order a cap and gown. For more information, visit the commencement day preview on the El Camino College website.
Men Of Color and FIRST Program
A collaborative fishing event, called “Catching a Break,” hosted by The FIRST and MOCAN programs, will take place at the Redondo Beach Pier on Friday, May 29, from 7 a.m. to noon. The outing will include gear, snacks and limited transportation as students must RSVP by Friday, May 22.
MICASA Center
Tacos, banda and dancing will be provided at the End-of-Year Celebration: “Raices y Logros” on Tuesday, May 12, at 5 p.m. for students graduating this spring semester. Hosted by the Mexican, Indigenous, Chicano, Caribbean, Central American, and South American Alliance (MICASA), this is a center on campus that fosters a safe, open space for students to build community with peers.
