The Cerritos College Falcons looked to avoid the sweep, when it was tied 12-12 in the third set, but an attack from El Camino’s women’s volleyball team put the defense in disarray and the Falcons rallied to keep the ball in play.

With the fans just about to jump out of their seats in excitement, sophomore middle blocker Jewel Yandall bumped the pass high toward freshman outside hitter/setter Skyler Ceballos, who went up and dumped the ball in between four Cerritos defenders.

The crowd sat down and the lead was just enough to give the Warriors momentum to end of the third set, winning it 25-20, sweeping the home team.

El Camino’s women’s volleyball team (16-2 overall, 6-0 in the South Coast Conference) visited the Cerritos College Falcons (12-8 overall, 5-2 in the SCC) and survived a close sweep (25-20, 28-26, 25-20) on Friday.

“Honestly, I thought they were going to be a lot better,” Yandall said. “Apparently they were really good last year, and I expected that.”

WVB coach Le Valley Pattison thought that the Falcons hurt themselves with errors during the match.

“They made a lot of service errors in key moments which kept them from finishing,” she said. “But they hung in there, they almost beat us in set two and kept it (close in set three).”

Freshman setter Nina Wyer added that the Falcons did some “weird tipping stuff” but thought that Cerritos was a good team.

Wyer thought the offense executed very well with Ceballos, who finished the match for Wyer, and that she did a really good job finishing the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Kezia Boyer shared the sentiments of the offense doing well tonight and said the match was a good win.

“We did a good job on moving the ball,” she said. “We didn’t get blocked that much, which was good, but they had some scrappy stuff, but we moved the ball around. I’m glad we won, but I’m glad we won in three (sets) and that we did it here (away).”

Next week, the women’s volleyball team will play three matches: starting with the continuation of the Pasadena City College match on Tuesday in the South Gym, followed by an away game at East Los Angeles College on Wednesday and finally at home on Friday against L.A. Trade Tech; all matches are 6 p.m.

Yandall said that the three matches might be tough for the team.

“It’s going to be a challenge,” she said. “But we’re going to rise above, that’s what we’ve been trained to do.”
