Power outage forces rescheduling for women’s volleyball match against Pasadena City College

After failing to comeback in the first set and a back-and-forth second set win, the El Camino women’s volleyball team looked to take the momentum and close out the match against Pasadena City College.

Big defensive plays and rallies led to a 5-2 lead for EC, and a big rally ended in favor of the Warriors, as they went up 6-2.

Then, all of a sudden, the lights went out and the South Gym was pitch-black; with some screams going out in the air.

After approximately 25 minutes of trying to figure out what happened, Friday’s match for the El Camino women’s volleyball team (12-2 overall, 2-0 in the South Coast Conference) against the Pasadena City College Lancers (7-3 overall, 2-0 in the SCC) was cancelled until further notice.

“I don’t think this happens too often,” coach Le Valley Pattison said. “But if it (has), then there must be some protocol and the commissioner will handle it.”

Although the match was cancelled, the set-one loss for EC was the first home-set loss of the season, and having seen how PCC played, some of the players felt strong about the rescheduled match.

“I was terrified (of the black out), honestly,” freshman setter Nina Wyer said. “Now that we’ve seen them, we can definitely (play better). They dumped a lot and we’ll be ready.”

Freshman middle blocker Taylor Brydon, who ended the second set with a kill, said that the cancellation was unfortunate, but shared the same thoughts with Wyer.

“It’s lame,” she said. “I’d rather get it over with now, but at least we know what they do. We didn’t react to their offense (tonight), but all they do is tip, so we’ll be ready.”

Sophomore middle blocker Jewel Yandall expressed her opinion of PCC being “good” and the best team the Warriors have faced all season.

Tonight’s match has been cancelled until further notice. Once the commissioner of the conference has handled the details, an update for the rescheduled match will be posted.
