With a struggling-pass defense and lackluster communication on the court, the Warriors were in some trouble against Yuba College during the second match of the day at the Cerritos Tournament today.
Stellar serving, great bench-passing and long breaks with no side-outs from the serves kept the team up in points and unbeatable at the end of the first day.
The El Camino women’s volleyball team extended its win streak to six and rose to 7-1 on the season after sweeping both Imperial Valley College (25-13, 25-9, 25-14) and Yuba College (25-21, 25-18, 25-21) at the Cerritos Tournament.
Nia Masui, sophomore middle blocker, thought the team was “hesitant” on the court and felt that the team must try harder tomorrow if they are to win.
“There are more competitive teams to play against tomorrow,” she said. “We need to work on communicating on the court. People think the other person is going to do something, and no one does anything.”
Comparing both games, sophomore middle blocker Jewel Yandall thought Yuba College was a much better team.
“Honestly, I think (Imperial Valley College) played like a two [on a scale of one to 10],” she said. “Yuba was probably like a five. The offense and defense was better compared.”
Head Coach Le Valley Pattison thought the defense was off the mark, but the bench players were a big role in helping the team’s defensive performance.
“Brooke (Russell, sophomore libero) is the key to our defense,” she said. “If she’s not passing well, then I should give somebody a shot. Brooklyn Rubio and Skyler Ceballos (both freshman outside hitters) were great.”
The
team will continue at the Cerritos Tournament, in the Cerritos Gym,
tomorrow at 9 a.m. The opponent is still to be determined.
