Warriors take third at Santa Monica tourney
The El Camino Community College Warriors men’s water polo team (2-13), placed third in the Santa Monica College Corsairs Tournament last Friday,Oct. 25, and lost two back-to-back games.
In the Warriors first game against the Corsairs (5-13), Adam Rudow and Adrian Delgadillo were the only two scorers. Rudow now has 30 points total for the season, and Delgadillo now has nine.
“We played our best during the two games,” Jonathan Diaz said. “But it wasn’t enough for us to win.”
The Warriors kept up during first quarter scoring four points, but in the second they were scoreless, and the Corsairs took advantage during second half scoring eight points.
“Our team was pretty much over matched in this tournament”, coach Corey Stanbury said.
“We need to work more on our communication,” Diaz said.
The men were scoreless in their second match against Fullerton Community College as they lost (0-12), and could not stop Fullerton’s offensive scoring spree.
“Fullerton is a pretty advanced team,” Goalie Tanner Castro said. “Our team played well, but things just went Fullerton’s way the entire game.”
The Warriors were out scored, with Fullerton racking up nine points during the first half, and added another three in the second.
“Fullerton knows how to shut down a lot of our plays, and knows how to counterattack well,” Diaz said.
“Our intensity during the first half went well, but we began to get lazy during the second half,” Diaz said.
Devin Sanchez and Diaz continued to show their defensive skills, both tallying up seven and five steals against the Corsairs. The two now have 68 and 27 total steals going into their next game.
Castro, Filip Kostic, and Ryan Mckinney played their roles well chalking up seven, six, and seven goals a piece. Castro and Mckinney also had steals of their own, recording both one and three.
Going into the Warriors next game, they look to improve on their errors and build their offense.
“We need to work more on our communication,” Castro said.
“Our counterattacks and winging out for passes during transition is what we will be working on before Wednesday.”
Castro has 63 saves, and Kostic now records 56.
The Warriors sail to Mt. San Antonio Community College Oct. 30, at home, set for 3 p.m.
