Former NFL player touched down at son’s football game

Phil Simms and son Matt, the new quarterback replacing Jimmy Coy this season for El Camino’s football team Warriors, were deep in conversation after the game on Saturday, September 5th, against Southwest College, Warriors winning with a score of 46-12.
While attending the University of Louisville in Kentucky, a photo was taken of Matt at a party and posted on the internet. Despite the controversy surrounding the photo, Phil seems to be nothing but understanding.
“He’s young, and like all kids, very few are angels,” said Phil Simms of his son.
Though Phil’s son is switching from playing at a university to playing at a junior college, Phil explains that it doesn’t matter where he plays, as long as his son gets time on the field.
“Playing is great,” says Phil, “no matter where you are.”
After considering three colleges, all residing in California, “the junior college center of the world,” as Phil says, they decided that El Camino was the best place for their son. Phil Simms admitted that he was excited about meeting John Featherstone, coach for the Warriors.
“He is always so full of energy,” said Simms of Featherstone. “I know his coaching history, and am excited that we are being a part of it.”
Featherstone is just as excited to have Matt play for the team this year. Matt has been training with the team since summer, and has had plenty of time to bond with his new teammates.
“We’re all getting along great,” says Matt about his team members.
While El Camino’s academic standing, spoken highly of by people that Phil had spoken to, did not play a role in the family’s decision to come here, he does expect his son to perform well academically, regardless of what school he is attending.
“We didn’t choose El Camino for its academics,” said Phil Simms. “Academics are whatever students put into it.”
Even though Phil is most famously known as a famous NFL player from the New York Giants, he is mostly importantly, and above all, a father. He was hesitant about his answer when asked what advice he would give to other fathers.
“Don’t be afraid to make decisions,” he said. “Father’s have knowledge, and they pass their experiences from father to son. I wasn’t afraid to have my son move to California.”
