Winning both of her singles matches against Los Angeles City College last Friday was the final notch in a perfect season for Pavithra Wijratne of EC Women’s Badminton.
Wijratne, whose season total in singles matches was 24-0, was able to draw the No. 1 seed for the South Coast Conference individual playoffs next Friday, a match which she expects to be difficult.
“I will most likely get a bye for the first round of matches,” Wijratne said. “I don’t know who I’m going to play yet, but I’m sure it’s going to be tough.”
EC (6-6) was able to win against LACC, 14-7, locking up the third spot in conference, allowing it to qualify to the SCC Championships tomorrow.
“It was a comfortable win for us,” John Britton, coach, said. “Lisa Harris was able to get her first win of the season; that was good to see.”
Along with a singles win from Harris, the team also obtained wins in the singles branch from Samira Yakubu and Wijratne.
“It felt really great to be able to win all of my matches, and to beat LACC,” Wijratne said. “Samira and I won both of our doubles matches, which helped us get the victory.”
Wijratne and Yakubu will play doubles together during the playoffs, entering with the No. 2 seed.
The two Warriors are considered to be the underdogs, a fact that they realize going into the playoffs but that drives them in preparation for tomorrow’s game.
“Since we don’t have any matches this week, we need to prepare for the playoffs, because this is our last chance of the season,” Wijratne said. “I am going to be as prepared as I can.”
Wijratne will attempt to keep her perfect season going and reach the state finals.
Qualifying for the state championships would require the team to travel north to San Bruno, just south of San Francisco.
“If we’re able to win on Friday, we will be headed up to Skyline College for next the round,” Britton said.
