Intercepting a pass with his chest from one of the opponents’ players at the midfield stripe, Socrates Anagostou headed the ball forward to begin a two-player run with teammate N’Fagie Koroma.
Anagostou passed to Koroma, who then toe-poked a pass back to Anagostou. Anagostou then shot a 10-yard diagonal inside the right post, scoring EC’s only goal against the Long Beach City College Vikings.
The Warriors will be facing the undefeated East Los Angeles College Huskies tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Murdock Stadium. It will be their last home game before going back on the road.
“It is going to be a tough game against East L.A. tomorrow,” coach Eddie Barragan said. “But we should come out with a win if we play the way we did against Long Beach City.”
After squaring off against the Huskies tomorrow, they will head to Pasadena Tuesday to face Pasadena City College. Both are conferences games.
Last Tuesday when the Warriors hosted the Vikings at Murdock Stadium, the team came out with a 1-0 win.
“It was a very good win for us, because it was a confidence boost,” Barragan said.
“This is how we usually play games; we know we are better than what the record says.”
The Warriors snapped a five game losing streak, bringing their overall record to an even .500 with a 6-6 record.
“It feels great to finally win a game after losing five straight games; we had good practices this past week,” Anagostou said. “We worked as a team and communicated with each other very well.”
The EC coaching staff changed some things out in the field by moving up Anagostou from defense to midfielder in order to see if the offense would amp-up its scoring.
The Warriors were able to capitalize in the changes their coaches made. Anagostou, who has being playing defense the whole season, scored the only goal of the game and his first of the season.
“We decided to make some changes out in the field and it worked,” coach Vic Cafarchia said. “It was a good win for us against a very good team.”
The Warriors’ defense played extremely well throughout the game, not allowing any goals by the Vikings.
Even though Hamzah AI-Rawi had just come back from a broken nose, he went out and held Long Beach City scoreless.
Last Friday, the Warriors faced first place Mt. San Antonio College and were handed their worst lost of the season, 6-1.
After having a suitable first half by only allowing one goal, the Warriors were slaughtered after goalkeeper AI-Rawi left just five minutes into the second half with the broken nose.
“It was a big loss for our team when AI-Rawi went down,” Cafarchia said.
“We did not have an extra goalkeeper, so we had to use one of our defenders as our goalkeeper, which did not work.”
