As the umpire called the game during the bottom of the fifth inning, the softball team hung its cleats and gloves after getting mercy ruled by Cerritos College, 12-3 Tuesday.
With a 1-10 overall record and 0-3 in conference, the Warriors lost to the East L.A Huskies Thursday 6-3 and to Cerritos due to a mercy rule.
The Warriors will travel to face Pasadena City College today hoping to eliminate as many mental mistakes as possible.
“We have a great chance to beat Pasadena if we work hard in practice and stay focused during the game,” assistant coach Randi Berg said.
The women fought hard to stay in the game against the Falcons, but by a National Collegiate Athletic Association softball rule, after one team is winning with more than eight runs, the game is called by the umpire.
“The Falcons just scored, we both had ten hits, but the Falcons knew how to bring in the runs,” Berg said.
Although the Warriors have lost their first three conference games, they realize what is holding them back from winning: Lack in communicating on the field and making dumb mistakes,” pitcher Dani Morvice said.
“This doesn’t put a damper on us; it just inspires us to do better,” Morvice said.
Yesterday at practice, Berg drilled them hard on eliminating the same mistakes the women seem to be making in all their games.
“The mental mistakes are hurting us every time; our hitting is improving, but these mental mistakes have to stop,” Berg said.
The team is tired of losing games this way; it knows it has the potential to win, but seems to have a problem executing when it comes to game time, Berg said.
“We need to communicate a lot better when we’re out on the field; if we do that, we will start winning a lot more games,” Morvice said.
The Warriors will face a busy week, as they participate in the Golden West Tournament starting this Friday through Sunday, and Mt. SAC Tuesday.
“We’re going out to this tournament to win every game; we have high hopes,” Berg said.
The Warriors are going into every game giving it their all to defeat any team, shortstop Steph Koss said.
“We’re improving a lot; we just need to stop with the dumb mistakes,” Koss said.
The team is looking forward to winning more games and improving its defensive abilities.
” We go in every game trying to win and we play hard,” Koss said.
