The journalism program at El Camino was awarded eight honors from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) 2016 State Convention this past weekend.
Students from both “The Union,” newspaper and EC’s general interest magazine, Warrior Life, were honored for writing and photography.
Photographers John Fordiani and Amira Petrus won first place in the Magazine Photo Essay category, while the Warrior Life staff placed second in magazine general excellence.
Sydnie Mills, current editor-in-chief of both publications, spoke highly of the team she has working around her.
“The staff spends countless hours at school and at home, working on the newspaper and the magazine so it’s always amazing to see their hard work recognized,” Mills said. “Besides it’s great when the staff can bring awards home for El Camino.”
Other winners for Warrior Life included Celine West for magazine news feature (4th) and Jean-Paul Udeh for magazine photo (4th).
For “The Union,” Fordiani placed second in the sports feature photo category while also earning honorable mentions in the sports action photo category and the editorial category. Former photographer Tristan Bellisimo also earned an honorable mention in the photo essay category.
The awards are the latest for EC’s journalism department, students also won in the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) and California College Media Association (CCMA) awards in February.
