A student who thought he was helping out a man by letting him use his cell phone to get a ride ended up getting robbed last Friday.
The student and alleged suspect were walking between the north and south PE Buildings, when the suspect asked the student to borrow his phone to make a phone call so he could get picked up, El Camino Police Sgt. Dal Toruno said.
The student walked with the suspect to the Math Business Allied Health Building from the PE Building and refused to give the student’s iPhone 6 back when they reached Lot A.
“The victim said the suspect had a phone in one of his hands, but said the battery was dead,” Toruno said.
The man then told the student “you’re not getting it back,” and the student attempted to take the phone back, but the man held onto the phone, pulled it away and ran off toward Redondo Beach Boulevard, Toruno said.
The student reported the incident to the police station and officers checked the area where the student last saw the man and couldn’t locate anyone, Toruno said.
ECPD has a picture of the suspect and is currently investigating the incident.
