Special glasses denied to former student accused of murdering mother; regular glasses granted

The defense attorney for the former student on trial for allegedly murdering his mother had a motion to order specific glasses, due to “mental health problems,” denied by the judge during today’s court hearing.

Judge Thomas R. Sokolov denied the motion to grant court-ordered glasses without prejudice, meaning that his decision may be re-evaluated at a later date, district attorney Maren Dermody said.

Nicholas Kim, accused of killing his mother, walked into court wearing a yellow “L.A. County Jail” top and blue pants. As he saw his attorney he released a smile full of confidence. He sat down and things began.

Kim has extreme near-sighted eyes and due to mental health problems he can have a “aggravation due to not being able to see facial expressions clearly,” defense attorney Lloyd Handler said.

But Sokolov did order regular glasses be given to the defendant, hoping that would solve the problem.

During the hearing, a Hermosa Beach ticket in Kim’s name, for a failure to appear, was dismissed.

Kim still has no bail on the murder charges and a $10,000 bail for a D.U.I.

After confirming the dates with the prosecution and defense, Kim’s next court date will be on Oct. 9.

“The defense is gathering evidence,” Dermody said. “They want a more favorable offer.”
