A man entered the courtroom wearing a “L.A. County Jail” uniform, with a yellow shirt and blue pants, and he held a white-styrofoam cup in his hands as he sat down for his second arraignment, today at the Torrance Courthouse.

Nicholas Hyunoh Kim, 30, a former-El Camino student was arrested on April 19 for the alleged murder of his mother, Sohyun Kim, in her Gardena apartment, according to a press release.

Judge Thomas R. Sokolov listened to the defense about setting a new preliminary-trial date for Aug. 13.

Sokolov asked both the deputy district attorney and the defense about whether or not there were special circumstances to the case.

Both sides agreed and said, “yes.”

As all parties agreed to Aug. 13 being the new pre-trial date, Maren Dermody, deputy district attorney, prepared to leave as Sokolov listed off other charges to Kim’s name:

• Kim is being held with no bail for allegedly killing his mother.
• He also has a $10,000 bail for driving under the influence (DUI).
• And has a $1,000 bail for a failure to appear in court.

Due to the “severity of the charges” the defense needs the new pre-trial date to prepare, Dermody said.

She added that her side of the case is doing well.

“Gardena (Police) did a great job on the case,” Dermody said. “They did their job diligently.”
