On Tuesday nights, while many people are working, doing homework or studying, church worship is going on at EC. Created by the father of a former EC football player, Don “Uncle Don” Holly has started the Tuesday night worship – something he likes to call Short Cut Ministries.
For the past seven weeks, Holly has been leading athletes and students through worship. It started off on the practice field and has now expanded and moved to the Student Activities Center.
On average, there are about 70 to 80 people who show up every Tuesday, many from the EC football and basketball teams. Knowing that many of the people who attend are athletes who just got off practice, Holly makes sure there is dinner ready for everybody who attends.
“We just want the kids to have food to eat,” Holly said. “To be able to know that God loves them and has a plan for their life. That’s what we’re all about.”
The worship consists of eating dinner, congregating and Christian music in the beginning. Once everybody is finished, Holly then has his sermon and talks about a particular message that he wants to get across that week. It ends in singing and prayer.
Holly said there may be criticism for what he started, but added that he is allowed to run it because there are other religious clubs around campus. He also said that he has support from “most, if not all, the coaches” at EC.
There is worship every Tuesday from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. in the Student Activities Center. Food and drinks are provided.
