Flying high for gold

Tumbling their way to victory, EC’s cheer team earned the title “State Champions” in their division during a recent CHEERpros competition.

The competition, held on Jan. 26 in Ontario, CA took place at the Citizens Business Bank Arena.

“In the four years of coaching here at El Co, this is the best team we have had,” coach Crystal Oropeza said.

Led by Crystal and David Oropeza, the team diligently practiced long hours during football season to get ready for competition season.

“Winning the first two competitions we’ve been to has been amazing,” Matthew Boone, 23, film major said. “I hope we keep working hard and ‘step it up’ like the coaches want.”

However, it wasn’t entirely an effortless sweep. While warming up, the team shakily ran through their routine. Hearing the crowd got the best of them, Boone said, and it wasn’t until they hit the floor that they executed every stunt.

“Our nerves were getting the best of us. We weren’t hitting the stunts right and everyone wasn’t all there,” he said. “As soon as we hit our first jump sequence, the crowd went nuts. After that we just pulled throw and hit everything perfectly.”

The team scored 95 and with only a single deduction to their score.

Jasmine Shaw, 21, undeclared major, was a member of the crowd cheering on her cousin Shay Vance, 22, photographic art major, and the rest of the EC team.

“The crowd was live and loud there,” Shaw said. “The competition was fierce and I was to proud to see them win in their division.”

Along with the win, Baubak Christopher Soltanikhah, 21, psychology major, went home with one of the CHEERpros Colligate Scholarships.

“They work so hard and I am so proud of them. I love my team,” Oropeza said.
