Having to forfeit the first game of the season because of unfinished forms, physicals and not enough players on the team has not discouraged the women’s water polo team; it is looking forward to playing in a home tournament on Saturday.

Participating teams will include Citrus, Cerritos, Fullerton, Rio Hondo, Santa Monica, L.A. Trade Tech and L.A. Valley.

There will be eight games and each team will play two games.

The Warriors are scheduled to start playing their first tournament game at 3 p.m., the third game of the tournament. The tournament will start at 1 p.m. with Fullerton against L.A. Valley.

Coach Corey Stanbury looks forward to the event.

“They’re good for gaining experience against other teams,” Stanbury said.

The team started the season off a bit shaky.

One of the reasons that the team was unable to play the first game of the season is because the coaches were still recruiting members.

A big concern was that the team did not have a goalie, which Stanbury said is the “most crucial position.”

It lacked the members needed because there were a lot of newcomers who were not aware of the program, Stanbury said.

“We managed to talk them into it,” Stanbury said. “Some are just swimmers who have never played before and it’s very different.”

The team consists of nearly all-new players with the exception of two players, and this will most likely affect the team.

“Most teams will be better than us,” Stanbury said.

The team, however, is feeling good about playing.

“Everyone tries her best, so that’s a good thing. No one is really negative,” new team member Kacy Turner, 17, said.

Turner is a player who will be valuable to the team.

“She’s very talented,” Stanbury said. “She can play the two-meter position.”

Yesterday, the team was scheduled to play against Chaffey, but the results of the game are not yet available.

Still, the team appeared eager to play.

“I’m excited just because it’s going to be the first game,” Turner said.

One team that Stanbury is looking forward to playing is L.A. Trade Tech. The team is to play them at the tournament on Saturday and later on in the season.

“It should be a lot of fun,” Stanbury said.

The members seem to agree. Above all, they are here to play and to enjoy themselves while doing it.

Elisa Finan, 17, said that her expectations for this season are to “have fun and get better.”

“I just want to see the team improve,” Turner said.

The team started with uncertainty; however, its eagerness to play and dedication might be the only boost it needs.

“I hope I’m ready,” Finan said. “It’ll be fun to play.”
