A pain in the arm wasn’t enough to slow down the badminton players who extended their undefeated record.
For Jennifer Hobson, the pain in her arm keeps turning up time and time again.
“When I play, my arm turns numb,” Hobson said.
However, with the performance Hobson gave, it was enough to help the Warriors to a 14-7 triumph over Pasadena City College.
Hobson won two out of three singles matches; 11-4, 4-11 and 11-8 to keep the Warriors (3-0) undefeated and in first place. She was also victorious in her two doubles matches, winning 15-8 and 15-4.
EC participated in an exhibition game at home last Wednesday against Brynn Marr, a private university located in Pennsylvania.
The Warriors defeated Brynn Marr, 9-7. The match took place due to a bye in league play.
The Warriors will continue league play Wednesday when they face a tough L.A. City College team.
“We are really showing improvement,” coach John Britton said. “The women played really well against Pasadena.”
The teams met earlier this season during an exhibition tournament in Pasadena.
The style of play the Lancers have wasn’t unfamiliar to the team.
“We’ve seen a couple of the girls before,” Danielle Ruedas said, who won in all but one of her matches. “We knew how they play.”
The team also had a rejuvenated Monique McShane playing at her top form.
McShane, who has admittedly not played well early in the season, came through with two wins in her singles competition and one in doubles.
Being that she is not the most optimistic person when it comes to criticizing herself, McShane was satisfied with her last performance.
“I think I played well,” McShane said, whose words carry extra weight due to her perfectionist nature on the court.
Despite having an seemingly unbeatable team, the Warriors will look to get stronger in the coming weeks.
The women will try to add their powerhouse player Yuka Sato to their lineup.
Sato is scheduled to debut against L.A. City College on Wednesday.
“I haven’t cleared my physical yet,” Sato said. “I will play next week.”
Britton was satisfied with the improvements made by his players.
“Marorie Cortez fought well. Her composure is growing,” Britton said about his new player who remains undefeated.
There is a sense of satisfaction among the team after its game against Pasadena.
“I played very well against Pasadena,” Yanni Ma. “I won three out of four games and that is always a good thing.”
