With Californians at least relatively satisfied with Gov. Schwarzenegger’s job performance, or what some might call showmanship, a lot of people are beginning to talk about screwing around with the Constitution to let foreign-born citizens become president.
Proponents of amending the Constitution might cite instances of governors who are foreign-born like the governor of Michigan and the Terminator. They might remind you of immigrants who fought and died for our country and the 700 who won the Medal of Honor. They will tell you of Americans who were only a few years, if not days, old when they left their country to become U.S. citizens.
At first it sounds like a good idea because as any politician looking for a vote will tell you, America is a nation of immigrants. This statement might be true in all of its syrupy sweet glory, but the problem is that our president already seems to have enough objectivity problems as it is when bunk bedding with predominately pro-American special interests.
For a foreign-born president to cut all ties and allegiances with his old country seems almost impossible, as it would require denying even the smallest of business and political favors in order to be vehemently pro-American.
It is usually dumb to predict future events, but if Schwarzenegger gets a Constitutional amendment and runs for president, he will probably get plenty of campaign money from Austrian business interests.
America is currently facing a crisis because of the porous Mexican border that supplies a steady stream of financial and social problems via illegal immigrants. We already have both political parties catering to their interests at America’s expense. Even President Bush, who is a Republican, has faced allegations of playing politics with immigration and amnesty; what kind of credibility would a president born in Latin America have?
Currently, our governor says he is not interested in amending the Constitution because he’s busy mending California. This is the same man who claimed he would not cave into special interests because of his wealth right before taking in millions of dollars in campaign donations.
Republicans running the country are starting to buy into the Schwarzenegger brand name because of his broad political appeal which caused him to get elected as governor. Even if Democrats bend over for the Republicans in support of an amendment, the odds are against it passing; historically there have been at least 10,000 proposed amendments with only 27 ratified.
Although the Republicans have a notoriously hard time finding charasmatic presidential candidates, they should not just manipulate the constitution to make it easier to win a campaign.
