Team is left out of the playoffs despite having won more games than some teams who finished first in their divisions.
The season came to the end, with the Warriors placing 13th in the South Coast Conference with an 9-7-3 overall record and 7-5-3 in conference.
“If we had won one more game, we would be in the playoffs automatically,” assistant coach Eddie Barragan said. “Everybody is disappointed about the playoffs, but it was a successful season for us overall even though we missed the playoffs.”
The Warriors had their last game on Nov. 8 against Mt. SAC and won, 2-1. The win, however, was very tough to obtain.
“Everyone thought we would have an easy game because Mt. SAC had not played well this season,” co-captain Kent Hayashi said. “So, our performance was not really good, but it was good that we still won.”
“Some of the players get over confident,” Barragan said. “I didn’t see the amount of aggressiveness that I saw the last few weeks, but it was enough to win.”
The first goal of the game came from midfielder Efrain Esquivias when he took a long shot from 35 yards out.
Mt. SAC evened up the score in a cross ball to the middle which was pushed into the net toward the end of the first half.
For second half, Hayashi scored a penalty kick and EC kept a lead until the whistle blew.
“They beat us in the midfield, but we take a win no matter how it comes,” Jorge Quintero said.
EC had a good game against Compton and seized a 3-2 victory on Nov. 5. The team played well the whole time against solid team despite having two days off.
“We didn’t run nor practice for two days,” Hayashi said “So, I think everyone was tired that day”
Forward Munir Massaud scored the first goal assisted by Quintero in the first half. Compton managed to tie the game and scored one more goal to take a lead in the second half.
The second goal for EC came from Hayashi when he took a shot from 18 yards out in front of the goal.
Forward Jerry Anderson headed a ball into the net to seal a win just as the game came to an end.
“That game was really good because Compton is one of the top teams,” Barragan said.
The team will lose two players next season, Hayashi and Saul Gonzalez.
“This year, we struggled through injuries, but we had a successful season,” Barragan said. “With many returning players and recovered players, we are going to have a good team. I’m excited about next year.”
