All-American honors were awarded at the swimming and diving state finals last weekend with two athletes taking home awards.
Coach Corey Stanbury said that if any of the swimmers or divers finished in the top eight places, that they were considered all-American.
They did very well,” Stanbury said. “More than thirty colleges had somebody there.”
Swimmer Matt Pifer finished 13th in the
50-meter freestyle, 15th in the 100-meter freestyle and eighth in the 100-meter backstroke.
I remember warming up down in the pool and seeing Corey,” Pifer said. “He pointed at me and held up eight fingers.”
Wendell Perkins, dove his way to second on the 3-meter board and third in the 1-meter competition.
Pifer’s weekend was different from the rest because his parents were there to cheer him on as he received his medal.
For Pifer, the highlight of the season was participating at state, but as he looks back at the season, Pifer said that he got a lot out of it.
I enjoyed the season because I made lots of friends on the team,” he said. “I met a very fun group of people.”
Even though Pifer is all-American, he said that he is still himself.
I’m still me. I’m really happy the way I performed,” Pifer said. “That’s how good of a team we have in both diving and swimming.”
An unexpected passenger in the EC van on Thursday on their way to Ventura was diver Shawn Anthony. He finished in eighth place in the 3-meter diving. Stanbury said that Anthony joined the team when two other divers from different colleges suddenly became ineligible.
All-American is the top sixteen in the nation for all community colleges.” Stanbury said.
Stanbury is excited about next year.
“They were lots of fun to work with,” he said,
