Harold Young has won plenty of accolades over the course of his track and field career. He added two more Saturday at the conference.
At the meet, Harold Young, was named Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Conference, while winning both the shot put and discus competition.
Young won the shot put with a toss of 57-8 and the discus with a throw of 172-1.
Following a solid performance at the finals last Tuesday, the men’s track and field team maintained good shape as many of the competitors placed for the So Cal Prelims at the South Coast Conference Championships Saturday.
In a very competitive South Coast Conference, the Warriors placed fourth with a score of 121. In first was Mt SAC, winning with a score of 222. Cerritos came in second with a total of 128, and Long Beach was right behind in third at 124.
Coach Dean Lofgren said that the conference is always competitive. He estimated that between four to five of the state’s top 10 teams were in the South Coast Conference.
“We almost pulled off the second place,” Lofgren said. “Overall, we are pleased with how the men performed.”
In an impressive performance where he qualified for the So Cal Prelims at Citrus Saturday. Nothing but the wind could deter Young’s performance.
“His shot put and discuss were both good, but the wind blew the wrong way,” assistant coach Rod Mansfield said. “He could have thrown even farther if the conditions were right.”
The conference javelin winner Andre Rochelle threw a 131-5 and placed third in the discus.
“I didn’t feel good that day, but I still came out third,” Rochelle said. “I’m excited about qualifying for So Cal Prelims.”
Darryl Guerin threw 43-10 and placed third in the shot put, qualifying for the So Cal Prelims as well.
There were two qualifiers from the high jump.
Amir Fisher had a 6-8 in the high jump.
“I’m excited about the next meet because this is the first time I’ve ever been in a big competition like So Cal Prelims.”
AJ Grigsby placed third in the triple jump at 42-4 and qualified.
Thomas Norcio qualified with a 13-7 pole vault.
The 400-meter relay team ran a 42.62, qualifying the team for So Cal Prelims.
Along with the 400m relay team, the 1,600m relay team qualified with a time of 3:30.51. The relay team finished in fourth place.
Justin Kalama ran a 58.51 in the 400m hurdles and took fifth, qualifying for the So Cal Prelims.
