Aviation career adviser Doug Reagon will be “flying” into EC to give his second lecture on the opportunities in the aeronautical field, today from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Career Center.
Reagon will be discussing several topics, including the career options in aeronautical science, the different levels of pilot programs and the length of the educational program.
“Most people think that becoming a pilot is this glamorous field to go into, but a few of us really get to know the reality of how difficult and challenging it is to actually get that commercial license,” Van Nguyen, career center adviser, said.
Reagon comes from the Makarion Institute of Aeronautics, a private school, which focuses on aviation.
“It’s a great opportunity for students to ask questions without actually having to make a visit to that particular site,” Nguyen said.
Reagon will give a step-by-step explanation of on the hour requirements and the networking systems involved in the aeronautical field.
Although EC does not offer any courses for an aeronautical major, Nguyen said the lecture is beneficial to students who are undeclared or undecided.
These types of workshops give students a chance to explore other career options that are available to them.
Roxanna Cortez, graphic design major, attended Reagon’s last lecture in October with more than 20 other students who also participated in the program.
Cortez enjoyed the workshop and found the information useful and interesting. She said even if students have another major they should think about attending the workshops.
“It was really interesting to know more about the planes. Even though I have another major, it was interesting to learn so many things,” Cortez said. “Until then, I had never actually sat down and thought about how it would be to work for an airline.”
Jessica Arredondo, nursing major, attended the lecture with a friend just to get an idea on the topic.
“It was very informative and I liked it,” Arredondo said. “I expected him to come and just promote his school, but it wasn’t much about that.”
Arredondo was pleased with the speaker’s willingness to inform the audience and believes his personality is what made the workshop so helpful and informative.
“He stopped every time to see if we had any questions and he was very open to answer any questions that we had,” Arredondo said.
Nguyen said this is not the last time an expert will be on campus to speak on this and other topics. The Career Center hopes to provide several career workshops for students to help them with their future career decisions.
“We are branching out our services to include other experts,” Nguyen said. “This way our students will have an opportunity to learn and discover a career they really enjoy doing.”
The Career Center is located in the Student Service Center and is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and closed Fridays.
