A strong second half by third- seeded Cypress College outgunned the women’s soccer team 5-0, Tuesday.
The Warriors were eliminated from the Southern California Regional Playoffs with a record of 12-7-1, 9-3-0.
The first half was fairly even, but the Chargers were more aggressive in the offensive zone.
“Cypress technically was the better team,” coach John Britton said. “But our aggressive defense denied them chances to score, getting them frustrated.”
The Warriors seemed fatigued from the start and unable to handle the Chargers’ pressure.
“I really don’t know what happened in the second half, but after they scored it was a major letdown for our team,” team captain Darcy Hubbard said.
The goal gave the Chargers confidence and momentum, leading to four unanswered goals.
“Bottom line, we played a good team and they were patient, which eventually exposed our weaknesses,” assistant coach Mary Jo Soufl said.
The loss was hard for sophomores Hubbard, Johanna Renza, Lauren Glick and Kasey Ruedas, their last game at EC.
“I really appreciated the efforts of these four women because they all gave up something to play,” Britton said. “They made a commitment, and although there were hiccups along the way they stuck it out and contributed.”
Last Tuesday, the Warriors lost to Mt. SAC, 3-0 with a lackluster first-half performance .
“They definitely dominated us, but I would say that only one goal was good and the others were just flukes,” Hubbard added.
Last Friday the women defeated East L. A. College 3-0.
“We as a team are proud of Lauren Glick,” defender Britani Bresee said of the midfielder who scored a goal. “She has been injured for a while.”
