One word to describe the current run through the South Coast Conference by the women’s volleyball team would be domination.
The Warriors have yet to lose a game in any conference match this year. After sweeping matches against Pasadena City and East Los Angeles last week , EC pushed its conference record to 6-0 and 9-2 overall. The Warriors are first in the league and ranked seventh in the state.
“Everyone is playing really well right now,” said Coach Le Valley Pattison.
The Warriors traveled to Pasadena Oct. 22 and swept them in three games (30-21, 30-19, 30-25). The Warriors were led by Timary More, who had 13 kills and seven digs, and Brittney Spainhour, who had 11 digs and two aces.
“Brittney is passing so well right now that it opens the floor for everyone,” Pattison said. “Timary and Amber Chisholm have really started to dominate their middle positions, which takes a lot of pressure off of Courtney (Spainhour) and makes the whole team better.”
Yesterday, the Warriors hosted Long Beach City College, but scores were unavailable at press time.
The last time they played each other, a depleted Warriors squad surprised an overconfident Long Beach team in straight games.
“Long Beach is going to be looking to get some revenge against us for the first match we played in conference,” said Tina More. “They were really talking a lot of trash before the game and were surprised at how fired up we were. I think it is going to be a real tough match.”
The Warriors hosted East Los Angeles College Oct. 24, defeating them in three straight games (30-17, 30-20, 30-21). The Warriors utilized a strong team effort to overwhelm a less talented East L.A. team.
“They (East LA) were just not up to our level,” middle blocker Kheli Davis said. “I think by playing in those preseason tournaments, it gave us a lot of confidence about what we could do in league and where we matched up with everyone else.”
The Warriors were led by Amie Abad, who had 11 kills, nine digs and 28 sets killed.
The Warriors also had a strong performance from Timary More, who posted nine kills, three digs and two aces.
The Warrior women lead almost all major statistical categories in the South Coast Conference. Timary More and Amber Chisholm lead in attack percentage. Courtney Spainhour leads the conference in kills and sister Brittney leads the conference in digs.
On Friday, the Warriors will travel to play cross-town rival Los Angeles Harbor. The Warriors were simply too much for the Seahawks last time around. This time the Seahawks will probably not present much of a challenge for the Warriors, who are taller, faster and more talented at almost every position.
Still, coach Le Valley Pattison said EC “can not afford a letdown.”
“We need to treat every match like it is a must win,” she said. “We have worked really hard to get where we’re at. But if we get happy with what we have done, we’ll not get where we want to go.”
