It was a David vs. Goliath battle as the No. 10 ranked El Camino women’s volleyball team waltzed into unranked East Los Angeles College on Wednesday night; but unlike the biblical story ending in which David overcomes the large stature of Goliath, the EC Warriors dominated the pace of the match.
The task proved to be too much for the home team as EC took down the ELAC Huskies for its 14th sweep of the season (25-16, 25-17, 25-10) to improve to 17-3 overall and 6-1 on the road, while ELAC falls to 7-11 on the season and 3-5 at home.
“We took care of business,” sophomore Taylor Brydon said. “They’re an unranked team, so we’re supposed to win this game.”
Despite the match lasting just under an hour, Brydon added that the team could have won it even faster.
“I think we definitely should have kept them under 15 points in (the first two sets),” she said. “We gave them a lot of points, so while we did win there’s things we need to work on.”
Average game time for the Warriors all season is approx. one hour and 30 minutes in previous 19 matches and only two other matches lasted around an hour (wins vs. L.A. Trade Tech and Chaffey colleges).
A couple of players did not get their usual start in the win vs. the Huskies:
- Freshman outside hitter Jaylin Motley (shoulder) was not dressed to rest her ailment, assistant head coach Liz Hazell said. She was replaced by sophomore libero/outside hitter Brooklyn Rubio.
- Sophomore middle blocker Victoria Curtice (sickness) missed practice on Monday and Tuesday. She was replaced by freshman middle blocker Cheyanne Smith.
“I think Cheyanne went in and did a great job,” El Camino coach Le Valley Pattison said. “Brooklyn did a fantastic job, she just keeps the ball in play and takes what the defense gives us. She makes up a lot of points for us because she’s so consistent.”
Next week features two home matches against Cerritos College on Wednesday and L.A Harbor College on Friday, and Pattison is excited for the match against CC.
“I think we played extremely poorly (in the first match vs. Cerritos),” she said. “I’m happy we get another shot at them. We’re improving and getting stronger and faster.”
